Out West
I spent the last year in Idaho...long story, but the short of it was that it was hard. I tried to write and paint everyday even though I don't have much to show for it; my art was muddy, my words cliché. My family was going through some hard stuff and the political climate didn't seem to offer much hope either. The landscape however, brought me back to my roots: the outdoors, horses, the quiet, surrounded by wildlife... It guided me through the chaos; grounded me in what I love about this crazy world; reconnected me to the magic amidst the madness.
Since I've been back in Portland, my art has slowly shiifted (again and always) to reflect that time. I'm painting abstract layers and finding ways to ground the pieces with magical moments of The West. The western spirit of grit, wonder, expansive landscapes, wildness, adventure, connection to the land and it's inhabitants...is what I'm pulling from these days.
